The district has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the project. Birchwood Middle was the first school in Rhode Island to pilot the the food waste reduction project in 2021.

Darren Barnes, 54, was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with stalking, vandalism and two counts of conspiracy. The investigation began back in March 2023, when Mayor Charles Lombardi reported that someone was harassing him.
