On April 24, 2024, a Norfolk Southern train blocked a Pine Knot railroad crossing, making it impossible for McCreary County EMS to promptly respond to a cancer patient who was breathing heavily and unresponsive. After a delay of more than thirty minutes due to the stopped train, EMS finally made contact with the patient at 9:13 a.m. and provided transport to the hospital.
