A DNA test revealed, after 12 years, that a hippopotamus registered as a male was actually a female. The Tennoji Zoo in Osaka, Japan, acquired the species from the Africam Safari reserve, in Puebla, seven years ago. The animal arrived in Mexico in 2011 from Africa for care and was ceded to the Japanese in 2016.
