In 1569, the Mughal emperor Akbar the Great celebrated his conquest of Rajputana by laying the foundations of an ambitious new capital, Fatehpur Sikri (“City of Victory”). Its red sandstone buildings still stand today, a Unesco World Heritage site. There is, though, one very notable absence: people.
