- The scheme, originally announced by Stalin in May 2022 and launched in September 2022, expanded through phases including a major extension in July 2024 reaching over 2.2 lakh aided school students in Tamil Nadu urban areas.
- The recent phase of the initiative now supports approximately 305,000 children enrolled in grades one through five across government and aided urban schools, with the goal of delivering warm, nutritious meals before lessons to enhance attendance and educational performance.
- Stalin committed Rs 600 crore annually to the scheme, while Mann called it a 'big relief' for working families and said Punjab will discuss adopting similar programs with Cabinet colleagues.
- Despite recent food contamination complaints, the Tamil Nadu government pledged to ensure meal hygiene and nutrition, and the scheme's success has inspired other states and international models, strengthening Tamil Nadu-Punjab ties.
