NEW DELHI, INDIA, AUG 7 – PM Modi pledges to protect Indian farmers and rural livelihoods despite US tariffs reaching 50%, affecting exports amid stalled trade talks and demands to open agricultural markets.
- On August 7 during the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference, Modi said, `For us, farmers' interest is the foremost priority. India will never compromise the interests of farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers. I believe, personally, I will have to pay the price, and I am ready for that,' as the new 50% import tax on Indian exports takes effect.
- Following his warning, Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, effective August 27, after a similar 25% duty last week.
- Data show India treats agriculture as a livelihood issue, with over 700 million people connected to the farm sector, resisting US demands to open markets.
- Defending the policy, India’s foreign office stated the tariffs are ‘unfair, unjustified and unreasonable’ and pledged to take ‘all actions necessary to protect its national interests,’ Randhir Jaiswal said.
- Later this month, US Assistant Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch is scheduled to visit India on August 25, as negotiations remain stalled.
