Number of Births Hit Record Low for Jan.-June in Japan

TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The number of babies born in January-June fell 3.1% from a year earlier to 339,280 in Japan, hitting a new record low for the first half of the year, the health ministry said Friday.

According to the preliminary figures for vital statistics released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare on the 29th, the number of babies born in the first half of 2025 (January to June) was 339,280, down 3.1% from the same period last year. This is the lowest number for the first half of the year since comparable data became available in 1969. The preliminary figures include foreigners.
